This weekend’s racing action at BIR is a trio of super-entertaining motorsports, including Superbike racing, stunt bike competition and International Watercross Association (IWA) racing, featuring snowmobiles that race on open water.
This is the second year BIR has hosted IWA racing. The IWA was at BIR two weekends last summer and was instantly popular with race fans, mostly because of how unique the sport is. Racers are literally skipping across the water on snowmobiles that have very few modifications made to them. They drag race across Lake BIR from one shoreline to the other, and they oval race around three markers in the water. Three or four snowmobiles at a time take off from shore with enough speed and momentum to carry them around the markers four or five times before returning to shore.
Do some sink to the bottom? Absolutely. Racers occasionally lose momentum and their sled sinks to the bottom. After the heat is done, a special pontoon maneuvers over the sled, lifts it up and transports it back to shore. With little effort, the racer dries out the sled and is typically ready for his or her next heat.
The IWA will be back at BIR for a second weekend Sept. 13-15.
A new addition to BIR’s schedule this year is the Simply Street Bike Kickoff Event, featuring a stunt bike competition, parade laps, rides, a dyno trailer, a bike wash and pit bike races. At center stage is Whisper Performance’s second annual Midwest Stunt Fest, which will showcase the talents of 20 stunt bike competitors.

And finally, the Central Roadracing Association will be at the track for three days of Superbike racing on BIR’s 3.1-mile, 10-turn Donnybrooke Road Course, which features a mile-long straightaway that leads into Turn 1, which riders can take at full throttle.
CRA’s schedule includes six-lap sprints for various classes all weekend. The CRA is at BIR five weekends this season. The next weekend is July 5-7 for the 27th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Show & Go.
