Thunder at the Lakes brings top Sportsman drag racers to BIR
Thunder at the Lakes rumbles into Brainerd International Raceway May 30-June 1, with the chance to give race fans a look at some of the best Sportsman drag racers in the country and some thrilling road racing on the 2.5-mile Competition Road Course.
Thunder at the Lakes, featuring the NHRA West Central Division’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, has been a mainstay at BIR for decades. Fans are treated to super-competitive drag racing in 12 classes: Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Sportsman Motorcycle, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and two Junior Dragster classes (Saturday only). Fans will see dragsters, cars, motorcycles and snowmobiles on the track.
Thunder at the Lakes is a chance for drag racers in the NHRA’s West Central Division to compete for divisional points and a shot at a national championship. The West Central Division stretches from Wyoming to Wisconsin and from Colorado to Kansas, and includes parts of Canada. Test & Tune is Friday, qualifying is Saturday and eliminations are Sunday.
BIR’s 2.5-mile, 13-turn Competition Road will be busy all weekend as well. On Friday, the BIR Performance Driving School will be on track, providing 25-minute driving sessions to those who participate in the one-day school, which includes classroom instruction as well. On Saturday, the World Racing League makes its debut at BIR with a 12-hour endurance race. It’s affordable racing for teams of three drivers – everyone is welcome! On Sunday, the Slowpokes Car Club is on the road course, and these drivers are anything but slow!
