Thunder at the Lakes

Thunder moves to August for NHRA Megaweek

Pittman_WThunder at the Lakes always brings some of the best Sportsman drag racers in the country to BIR, but this year’s event will take on a completely different look.

Thunder at the Lakes, featuring the NHRA West Central Division’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, will be Aug. 12-14 this year – the weekend before the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. Most of the drag racers who compete at Thunder also compete in the Sportsman classes during the NHRA Nationals, so the new format allows them to knock out both events in one long week, creating an NHRA Megaweek for racers and fans alike.

Racers will compete in 12 classes: Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Sportsman Motorcycle, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and two Junior Dragster classes (Saturday only). Fans will see dragsters, cars, motorcycles and snowmobiles on the track.

Thunder at the Lakes is a chance for drag racers in the NHRA’s West Central Division to compete for divisional points and a shot at a national championship. The West Central Division stretches from Wyoming to Wisconsin and from Colorado to Kansas, and includes parts of Canada. Test & Tune is Friday, qualifying is Saturday and eliminations are Sunday.

Cherry Guns will provide live music Saturday night at The Wheelie Bar & Grille.
