Loeffelholz steals show from Juniors during Bracket 2 race

Last weekend’s Bracket Drag Racing Series event at Brainerd International Raceway was suppose to celebrate the Junior Dragster program, but Reno Loeffelholz stole the show.

Saturday’s race included the NHRA Summit Racing Junior Drag Racing League Challenge, where junior racers ages 8-18, competed for Wally trophies like their heros on the NHRA circuit win. Twenty-two drivers competed in the three classes, all driving scaled-down dragsters, some of which run over 80 mph.

At the end of the night, Emma McFarland, Garrett Lindquist and Dylan Dancer took home the coveted hardware.

But the weekend belonged to Loeffelholz, who had an amazing weekend by beating every Pro ET Class driver who lined up against him. He won the class Saturday night by beating Nicholas Engler and then disposed of the Super Pro Class winner, Brian Johnson, in the Super Pro/Pro ET Shootout.

On Sunday, Loeffelholz won his way to the Pro ET finals again, and then took down Steve Brings in the finals before going head to head with Super Pro winner Randy McFarland in Sunday’s Shootout. Loeffelholz proved to be too much for McFarland as well, finishing with two Pro ET wins, two Shootout wins and claiming first place in the Pro ET points standings.

Driving a 1968 Mustang, Loeffelholz didn’t really have an explanation for his good fortune, other than to say the car ran well and he was consistent on the starting line. Once he started

winning rounds, his confidence went through the roof.

“I felt good going into Sunday,” he said. “I didn’t change a thing. I just stuck with what I did Saturday.”

Even though he’s only 20 years old, Loeffelholz knows how to win drag races, provingĀ  it last September by winning the Pro ET Class during the NHRA West Central Division Summit Racing ET Finals in Topeka, Kan. He was racing against the best amateur drag racers from 21 other tracks throughout the Midwest. In BIR’s 2013 Bracket Drag Racing Series, he finished second in the Pro ET standings.

Loeffelholz’s runs were a consistent 9.47 seconds at 134 mph.

In the Super Pro Class, Johnson won Saturday’s race by beating Larry Wiebusch Jr. with a run of 7.688 seconds at 154.44 mph. McFarland took down Jordan Pratt in Sunday’s final with a time of 7.750 seconds and 166.58 mph.

Jason Clampitt was a double winner in the Pro Bike/Sled Class. He beat Bruce Sampson in the finals on Saturday with a time of 9.755 seconds and 129.73 mph on his ’79 Kawasaki, and then Mike Voss in Sunday’s final with a run of 9.775 seconds and 130.85 mph.

Emma McFarland beat McKenna Bungert in the finals of the Junior Dragster Advanced Class for ages 13-18 to win the Challenge and a Wally. She also won on Sunday.

Dylan Dancer was a double winner in the Junior Dragster Novice Class for ages 8-9, beating Ayden Copham for the Wally trophy on Saturday.

Garrett Lindquist beat Treavor Jelinski in the finals of the Junior Dragster Intermediate Class for ages 10-12 to win the Wally trophy in that class.
